Job Details

Job Summary:
The Controller will oversee all financial reporting and accounting functions for a health plan organization, ensuring compliance with GAAP and SSAP standards. This leadership role is responsible for managing the Accounting team, driving financial accuracy, and implementing effective controls and policies. The Controller will collaborate closely with senior leadership, playing a key role in financial strategy and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and develop the Accounting team, fostering a high-performance culture
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and SSAP
  • Oversee financial regulatory filings, including NAIC and CMS requirements
  • Manage external audits, ensuring successful and efficient completion
  • Develop and implement strong financial controls, policies, and procedures
  • Conduct regular balance sheet and SOX reviews across all lines of business
  • Prepare and present executive summaries and key financial metrics to leadership
  • Contribute to the company's strategic planning process
  • Coordinate financial projections with corporate Treasury to maintain required RBC levels
  • Oversee month-end close processes, budget development, accounts payable functions, and administrative cost reviews
  • Manage state regulatory requests and administer the annual reinsurance program

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
  • CPA certification required; public accounting experience preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of financial accounting experience within the health insurance industry (Medicare Advantage experience preferred)
  • At least 10 years of progressively advanced accounting experience preferred
  • In-depth understanding of U.S. GAAP and regulatory requirements
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to coach, develop, and mentor teams
  • Highly analytical with strong problem-solving skills and a focus on process improvement
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders and provide actionable insights
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities under tight deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience interacting with auditors, regulators, and senior leadership
