ASIC is seeking a corporate counsel (8-10+ PAE) to lead the Information & Data Law team at ASIC providing strategic legal advice on a range of information law matters, including privacy, information handling and exchange and Freedom of Information. The Corporate Counsel will work with senior executives, supervise a team, and enjoy a supportive environment with ongoing training and diverse in-house legal work.

The team
ASIC's Legal Services Group is essential in maintaining ASIC's reputation as an effective regulator and enforcement authority. Legal Services is a large, dynamic and diverse in-house legal team that provides high quality legal support to ASIC's various functions via the following Business Units: Enforcement Legal Services, Regulatory Legal Services, Corporate Legal Services and the Hearing Delegates Team.
The Information & Data Law team is responsible for partnering with key internal ASIC stakeholders by advising on, and managing, legal compliance risks associated with privacy, Freedom of Information (FOI) and other information law-related issues related to data exchange and the provision of ASIC's digital and information services.
The role
As a Corporate Counsel within Corporate Legal Services, you will:
- Lead and manage the Information & Data Law team, setting strategic priorities and managing resources to drive impactful results.
- Provide high-level advice to senior management on complex compliance matters, including critical Privacy Act and FOI Act issues.
- Shape ASIC's privacy and data management policies by offering strategic insights on Commonwealth legislation and policies.
- Stay ahead of legislative changes, manage legal risks, and ensure ASIC's compliance with reporting obligations.
- Supervise and mentor a team of talented lawyers, fostering collaboration with other legal professionals and stakeholders across ASIC.
About you
- Legal qualifications and eligibility for a Restricted Legal Practicing Certificate in Australia.
- 8-10+ years PAE as a lawyer, with relevant experience in government, in-house, or law firm.
- Strong legal advice writing and verbal communication skills with excellent organisational and time management skills to handle multiple priorities.
- Team and people management skills.
- Knowledge of the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, financial services legislation, PGPA Act, Legal Services Directions, and other relevant laws and policies.
