The Department
Situated at 580 Swanston Street Carlton, Melbourne Health Centre (MSHC) has been in operation since 1918 as a specialised unit for the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The service has established a reputation for clinical excellence by providing high quality sexual health care. MSHC became a part of Alfred Health in 2003 having previously been managed by the Victorian Department of Human Services. Services provided by MSHC include screening, testing, counselling, information, referral, health education and clinical management of STIs including HIV.
The Role
We are looking for a counsellor to join a team of one other part time counsellor, with clients often presenting in need of crisis management. The successful candidate may possess a qualification from a relevant discipline, but will be employed as counsellor and provide counselling services in accordance with the position description. Clients attending Melbourne Sexual Health Centre come from diverse backgrounds, including those experiencing new HIV and STI diagnoses, working in the sex industry, gender diversity and identity, mental health, alcohol and other drug issues, lack of social connection, and family violence amongst other issues. Most clients are referred through our walk in and wait service and many are seen on the day they present for sexual health issues. A range of presenting issues include but are not limited to, Anxiety and Depression, Substance abuse including 'Chemsex', Relationship and Partner Family Violence, Sexuality and 'Coming Out', adjustment to diagnosis and, commencement and adherence to lifelong medication regimens.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Tertiary qualifications and accredited with counselling in the fields of Psychology, Mental Health, Social Work or Mental Health Nursing.
- Current registration with Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications in therapeutic theories and practice of at least two years.
- Sound understanding of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies (CBT) and motivational enhancement therapies.
- Sound knowledge of sexually transmitted infections, treatments, and therapies.
