The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Director, Courts Policy, Strategy and Legislation to provide a critical role within Courts and Justice System Reform.
About the Business Unit
The Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) provides a range of government programs and services focused on improving community safety, victim services, regulatory services and crime prevention, and building strong collaboration across the justice system. The Justice System Governance branch is located with Courts and Justice System Reform (CJSR) business unit in the Courts, Civil and Criminal Law (CCCL) group. CCCL supports the Attorney-General, DJCS Ministers and the department by providing legal, policy, integrity and assurance expertise.
About the Role
The Director Courts Policy Strategy and Legislation is responsible for leading Attorney-General policy and strategy relating to the courts and VCAT, including:
A member of the CJSR and CCCL executive leadership teams, the Director leads approximately 18 staff across three teams providing leadership, strategic direction and guidance. The role is responsible for managing staff development and performance, team resources and budgets, and leading policy and strategy for the Attorney-General's courts portfolio.
Some of your duties will include:
- Provide high-level, accurate, timely and strategic policy advice and support to the Executive Director and Deputy Secretary to support the Attorney General, Ministers, the Secretary and other stakeholders.
- Lead and oversee the management and delivery of priority legislative, policy and strategic projects for the Attorney-General and other justice Ministers.
- Support the Executive Director and other branch Directors to oversee and deliver the Attorney-General's overall legal policy program.
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A proven track record in senior management and corporate leadership in matters of operational management, resource management, quality management practices and corporate governance.
- Exemplary stakeholder engagement, relationship and management skills including demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships with key senior stakeholders and to deal responsively, practically and creatively with complex issues.
- Demonstrated ability to provide judicious, strategic, pragmatic and feasible solutions to issues relating to government.
- Proven resource and people management skills, including demonstrated ability to build effective high-performance teams and to successfully lead change.
- Sound strategic thinking skills combined with an expert understanding of how to work across Government.
