Reporting to the CFO, this position is responsible for the daily accounting department operations for the Association and its for-profit business units, Foundation, and Political Action Committee. The position holder will assist the CFO in managing the finances of all NYCUA entities and in developing and implementing financial strategies. The position holder will be actively engaged in the daily accounting department operations ensuring the accuracy and integrity of accounting records; the timely and accurate preparation of consolidated financial statements, annual budgets and forecasts; completion of financial and compliance audits; and timely preparation of financial and regulatory reports.
This position will be based in our office in Albany, NY with a hybrid work environment and a standard 35-hour work week. The salary range is between $86,200and $129,300 annually. Pay rate offered will be based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities and in consideration of internal equity.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- With the support of the Assistant Controller, be directly responsible for and engaged in the processing of transactions, maintaining accurate accounting records, and compiling and maintaining support schedules and reconciliations in the following areas including but not limited to: general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, cash and investments, and taxes as well as specialized accounting records and activities related to NYCUA's residential mortgage banking subsidiary. Ensure timely and accurate completion of department accounting activities.
- Serve as back-up to Assistant Controller in processing daily internal and external mortgage servicing transactions.
- Oversee period end closings, consolidation of financial records, and preparation of financial statements and related reports. Prepare analyses and reports comparing actual results to budgets and prior periods.
- Support CFO in meeting all regulatory, tax, and compliance filings and reporting deadlines.
- Responsible for coordinating the completion of four external annual financial audits. Coordinate audits and manage schedules, meet audit requirements, oversee all internal work performed by staff in support of audit, respond to inquiries and requests, and work with audit personnel to ensure timely and successful outcomes. Support CFO in the preparation of all audit reports, including disclosures, and review for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Support CFO in preparing for Board meetings and Audit Committee meetings.
- Coordinate the development of the annual budget and periodic forecasts and prepare related analysis and reports for review by the CFO.
- Assist the CFO in managing the finances, financial resources, and other business matters of the organization. Perform analysis and research and prepare forecasts for the CFO.
- Assist the CFO in facilitating the resolution of any departmental and/or organizational financial issues as well as making recommendations on the accounting for and implementation of new initiatives.
- Provide financial assistance and support to other Directors and Senior Management to support their programs, department operations, and services to members and clients.
- Ensure that payroll and benefits are properly and accurately recorded in the general ledger through coordination with Director of Human Resources.
- Oversee operation of accounting processes, accounting controls, chart of accounts, and accounting policies & procedures ensuring organizational compliance. Monitor ongoing technology and accounting software to ensure optimal support in meeting organizational needs. Identify and Implement changes and revisions as needed.
- Monitor operating cash flow and long-term investment portfolio returns. Work with CFO whenever investable funds are identified to make recommendations in compliance with the organization's Investment Policy.
- Supervise one direct report and provide training/development as may be needed as well as conduct periodic performance reviews.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, minimum of 7 years of related experience with at least 3 years in a management role is expected. With multiple entities within this organization having diverse financial operations, the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fluid work environment is essential. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be substituted.
- A thorough understanding of accounting principles and procedures, a high level of business acumen, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of financial statement consolidations are required.
- Demonstrated experience with accounting systems and report writers.
- Experience in one or more of the following is a plus, but not a requirement: payroll management and familiarity with the preparation of Form 1120 and 990 tax returns.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
