How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne:

The Media Advisor coordinates media relations and digital communications for the Lord Mayor's Office, to support the Lord Mayor's role as chief spokesperson for the City of Melbourne.

The position supports the implementation of effective media strategies across traditional, social and emerging media channels. Working across a high volume and complex portfolio, the role plays a supporting role, developing high quality content that is aligned to strategic direction.

The role maintains an awareness of the media environment, maintains productive relationships with media and stakeholders and ensures delivery of relevant, accurate and timely media advice to a high standard.

The role also delivers a best practice approach to the day-to-day management, content development and implementation of the Lord Mayor's official social media channels.

The role is responsible for collaborating with the City of Melbourne's Communications Branch to coordinate content and media responses and ensuring that appropriate approvals and risk management are applied.

The role reports to the Senior Media Adviser in the Lord Mayor's Office.

What you will bring (Selection Criteria):

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Journalism, PR or Communications and/or equivalent experience gained from working in a similar role.
  • A successful record of work in journalism, public relations or other media related field, including sound knowledge of media relations procedures and the methods and technologies used by the media.
  • Demonstrated media relations experience with a proven understanding of organisation messaging and positioning.
  • Strong issues management experience and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • An ability to work both proactively and reactively and to make recommendations in deciding appropriate courses of action when escalating high-risk matters, as required, to ensure timely and appropriate resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide well-considered media advice on diverse issues, some of which are sensitive and complex.
