About us

Legal Aid NSW helps people with their legal problems. We can help people with most areas of criminal law, family law and everyday civil law legal issues. We give legal advice, help at court and do family dispute resolution. We can do this over the telephone or at one of our 27 offices.

About the role

The role of Paralegal (Legal Practice Support Officer) will manage on a day-to-day basis high-level administration and some file work. The work will include managing files relating to family law matters, care and protection, Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders, and other matters including brief preparation for counsel, briefing letters to experts, and administration of subpoenas. The role also requires you to prepare and coordinate a range of family law documents, conduct legal research, and provide high-level assistance in offices across the state.

About you

You will have previously worked in a similar role where you provided clerical, administrative, and legal support to solicitors and a range of stakeholders. You are a high-level communicator and possess meticulous attention to detail enabling you to provide great service to your stakeholders, where you will be responsible for collating and delivering accurate information relating to court matters and will be required to attend court to file documents. Your communication skills will enable you to work with a range of clients, provide advice to clients and other stakeholders. You have a sense of urgency enabling you to manage and prioritise work, and you're a self-motivated individual who has excellent written and verbal communication skills. You are a creative thinker and possess the ability to manage diverse and demanding high-volume workloads.

The essential requirements for this role

You must:

  • Be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and a Working with Children Check.
  • Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing vacancies), or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary vacancies).
  • Must hold an NSW Drivers Licence, and some roles may require the ability for remote travel.

The Family Law Division has several roles where it is a statutory obligation for staff to hold a valid Working With Children Check. You will be required to provide your Working With Children Check details prior to commencement in any role requiring the check.
