Location: The Department of Health is looking for a Principal Legal Advisor to join the Office of the Secretary Team.
The Team:
- Legal Services sits within the Office of the Secretary and provides specialist high-level legislative review and legal support advisory services to the Minister, Health Executive, and service delivery areas.
- The three areas of outputs are Legislative and Governance, Transactional, and Medico-legal - including coordination of the Department's legal liability claims.
- The team operates with significant flexibility across legal disciplines, so please call to discuss the role even if the duties only partially appeal to your skills and interests.
The Role:
Support the management and delivery of legal services to the Department of Health (DoH), including managing administrative law issues in conjunction with key stakeholders, including governance and accountability obligations such as delegations and Right to Information requests, and other legal support advisory services.
The Duties:
- Manage the provision of specialist high-level legislative review and legal support advisory services to the Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Secretary, Deputy Secretaries, Executive, Strategic Executive, and other senior managers in DoH regarding legal policy issues for the health system including statewide and national issues and developments.
- Manage and coordinate compliance measures for relevant DoH and Government policies, practices, and procedures, codes of conduct, and probity requirements to ensure the provision of consistent, high-quality, effective, and efficient service delivery statewide and to ensure work practices within Department of Health are in accordance with legislative, contractual, statutory, and other legal requirements.
- Provide specialist advice on a range of complex and sensitive legal matters. This is often performed in consultation with the executive, senior management, and officers both within the DoH and across Government Agencies and Offices.

Details of Appointment:
General Stream, Band 7. Permanent full-time day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full-time, part-time, and casual vacancies.
Salary: $128,102 to $134,832 pro rata. Our Employer 11.5% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022
