The Department

The Alfred Health Cancer Program is responsible for the overall delivery of a comprehensive cancer service which includes a number of clinical areas and units including; Medical Oncology, Haematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, State-wide Haemophilia Service, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and the Victorian Melanoma Service.

Located in Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre, the Day Treatment Area provides care for patients providing systemic therapy for most adult solid tumours and blood cancers, as well as apheresis and outpatient stem cell transplant service.

The day treatment area accommodates:

  • Dedicated systemic anti-cancer therapy chairs
  • Bone Marrow biopsies
  • Apheresis
  • Co-located SURC clinic
  • Co-located Cancer Clinical Trials

The Role

The Symptom and Urgent Review Clinic (SURC) led by the SURC nurse, aims to provide patients with a specialised cancer direct referral service if they are experiencing symptoms of their systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) or disease 7 days per week. The aim of SURC is so patients avoid admission via the emergency department, reduce patient length of stay by early intervention on symptoms and provide a point of contact for patients and carers to access support during their treatment.

Experience and Skills Required

  • Current Registered as a Registered Nurse with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via AHPRA
  • Advanced clinical knowledge and skills in Cancer Nursing with ADAC competency (minimum 5 years acute cancer nursing experience)
  • Post graduate qualification in Cancer Nursing preferred/working towards Masters qualification
