Division: Independent Public School - South Metropolitan Education Region

Salary: Teacher, $85,610 - $124,046 per annum (pro-rata) (SEA GA 2023)

This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 2, 2025

Como Secondary College (SC) is located between Manning Road and Canning Highway in the City of South Perth. Catering for Years 7 to 12, students can follow Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), General or Vocational education and training (VET) pathways, preparing for university entry, Technical and Further Education (TAFE) or the workplace. The strong academic program is complemented by a specialist learning program supporting students in Years 7 to 9 who are at risk in literacy and numeracy, and a flexible learning program for students in Years 11 to 12 allowing them to make an effective transition from school to work or other training.

Como SC builds promising futures for our students through providing an excellent education and a rich range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. Central to the students' experience at Como is a school culture that promotes learning. The school is driven by the deep belief that every student is capable of successful learning and that it is the responsibility of every teacher to ensure that all students progress. At Como every student matters. As a school and as teachers we don't give up on students - we constantly explore new ways to engage students who are not making progress. The personal and familial attributes and circumstances relating to a student are not viewed as excuses for a student's lack of academic and/or social progress. Instead they are viewed as challenges to be overcome.

Como SC is seeking a teacher with a strong interest in the social and emotional well-being of students to become a full-time member of our Student Services team. The position would be ideal for aspirant teachers with a background in Student Services who want to develop their skills and knowledge in this area with a view to gaining future leadership positions in a secondary school or within the Department of Education more broadly.

The successful applicant will work within a team consisting of a Level 3 Program Coordinator Manager of Student Services, Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO), chaplain, youth worker, nurse, school officers, psychologist, and Year Coordinators. This team will grow and evolve into the future as the school develops a holistic, proactive program that develops a positive school culture and enables students to develop skills and knowledge that enable them to cope with life's pressures. In line with the College Business Plan, a key focus in 2025 will be collaborating in the re-conceptualisation and redevelopment of the roles and processes within Student Services. The Student Services Coordinator will bring a strong and diverse skill in pastoral care to support an integrated system that proactively addresses issues and where every staff member has a role and responsibility to maximize well-being and positive behaviour in the school.

The successful applicant should be an enthusiastic and highly focused individual with effective leadership, communication, and behaviour management skills. You should have the ability to form effective working relationships with even the most difficult students and parents through highly developed interpersonal skills. The successful applicant should be the public face of the school and the first point of contact for many parents. The successful applicant should have excellent organisational and planning skills to implement programs that support student achievement, behaviour management, attendance, and health and well-being. Proactive programs that enable students to self-regulate their behaviour and make good choices will be a particular focus.

The successful applicant will work with the Student Services Manager and school officer support staff to monitor students' attendance and behaviour from Years 7 to 12 and intervene when necessary. They should assist in maintaining the day-to-day operations of Student Services as well as for major school events. The successful applicant should be resilient, approachable, empathetic, reflective, and seek advice and support in stressful situations.
