Job Description:

Budget Title: Senior Staff Associate (SL-5)

Salary: $125,000 - $145,000

The Technology Transfer Director is a senior member of the EIP team, playing a pivotal role in shaping the university's innovation landscape. This executive position is responsible for engaging faculty and graduate student researchers, commercializing research outcomes, building out the IP portfolio, fostering strategic partnerships, and contributing to regional economic development goals and outcomes. The Director oversees all aspects of technology transfer, including marketing, patenting, and licensing, spinout launches, as well as promoting a culture of entrepreneurship among faculty and students across various disciplines. As related to intellectual property management and technology commercialization, the Director will support major externally-funded EIP initiatives such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage Binghamton technology transfer activities, including evaluation, patenting, marketing, and licensing of university intellectual property.
  • Execute, across the full lifecycle, commercialization partnerships with private sector parties.
  • Develop and implement strategies for effective commercialization of research innovations.
  • Collaborate with university leadership in fostering an environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurship; deliver training and mentoring, for example in customer discovery, to faculty.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, university, Research Foundation for the State University of New York (RF SUNY), and SUNY policies and regulations related to intellectual property and technology transfer, including those related to ownership of IP, reporting of inventions, distribution of licensing revenue, and management of conflicts of interest; create or update relevant campus policies.
  • Negotiate and sign or approve agreements, including, but not limited to, options and licenses, nondisclosure, material transfer, intellectual property, and inter-institutional agreements; update and create template agreements.
  • Help secure funding for technology transfer activities through grants, partnerships, and other revenue-generating initiatives.
  • Build, manage and mentor the technology transfer team, promoting professional development and operational excellence.
  • Represent the university in regional, national, and international forums related to technology transfer and economic development.
  • Manage the technology transfer unit's budget, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Work collaboratively within the RF SUNY and Division of Research, including at industry-facing centers, to deepen relationships and networks with faculty, as well as with partners in industry, academia, government funding agencies, and the investment community.
  • Coordinate with and contribute to EIP incubator and accelerator programs in promoting University spinout formation and growth, as well as technical services and R&D expertise available to client ventures in building a portfolio of IP assets.
The ideal candidate thinks strategically, is results-driven and action-oriented, a team player, an excellent communicator, has strong interpersonal skills, is able to interact diplomatically with staff, peers, faculty, and outside parties, is an active learner, analytical, has an aptitude for outreach and networking, and is capable of directing completion of multiple tasks simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.

Requirements:
  • Master's degree in business, science, engineering or some other field related to innovation commercialization or entrepreneurship
  • Seven (7) years of professional, supervisory work experience in a technology transfer or commercialization role at a university, in industry R&D or business development units, or at a federal or state economic development agency
  • Demonstrated success in patenting, licensing, and commercializing technologies
  • Strong understanding of the legal, business, and technological aspects of technology transfer
Preferred:
  • PhD or JD degree
  • Ten (10) years of professional experience in a technology transfer role at a university
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with a track record of building productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Success in securing grants or investment for innovation, technology- or business development initiatives
  • Knowledge of current trends, policies, and regulations affecting university technology transfer and commercialization
